Why Convergent Journalism is being very powerful and important?

By Hassan Zeinab

Journalism has always been a way to connect all different parts of the world together. And this industry is developing day by day. The move from a media environment defined by broadcasting and newspapers to a digital, mobile, and platform-dominated environment is the most fundamental change in how people communicate since the development of the printing press. Today with the new world of the internet comes a new form of journalism: Convergent Journalism, it is the multimedia journalism that is being very powerful and effective across multiple platforms and mediums for many different reasons.

First, Convergent Journalism brings together multiple forms of media to tell more effective story. The incorporation of multimedia elements makes news websites more informative and entertaining. Nowadays, the way how people are understanding the news event and perceiving the world is shaped by images and videos, and no longer depending on texts. For example, when people visit websites to read an article they will likely see a video or a photo within the article. This is much more appealing for the reader while reading a newsprint article; and that is the formula for convergence.

Second, It is immediate and accessible. The public increasingly wants to access quality news and information at any time through all media that are convenient or appealing to them. So the instant availability of news and moment-based content is one of the top advantages of media convergence between traditional journalism and the new one. As all information can be accessed at any time using internet, social media and different sites, it is a convenient way for people to stay up-to-date on local, national and world news.

Furthermore, public reaction is monitored and engaged in such system. Because the newly converged media platforms provide endless opportunities for users to comment on the story or provide links to relevant material as well as online access to the archive. And that is how the audience now is less passive than it used to be. Many people, especially younger people, want to create, respond to, and interact with media. So it creates a relationship and trust between news providers and readers.

In conclusion, The rise of multimedia has empowered professional journalism worldwide. News and content are being produced in a more impactful way. Also it became available and easy to access at any time and for the majority. So it does not only produce and distribute news, but also enhances the relationship between news providers and readers to result in winning the battle for people’s attention and trust.
Convergent Journalism is having a significant change driven by digital innovation and the networked environment. And as we move forward, it will continue being more important than ever.

  1. In addition to empowerment, convergence has pushed journalism to be more creative. Journalists are now able to present news in various formats and styles to appeal to different audiences and devices. Especially for social media, content should be entertaining and relatable to followers to stand out from the crowd and encourage engagement. As a result, media creates relationships with their audience, which is key, as the article mentions, to building trust and loyalty. (Bernarda V)
